Chapter 17:

In terms of career counseling, I find it hard to understand how one might predict a sudden change in the labor market.  I think it is important to at least be aware of possible changes that may impact a person’s work environment, yet I do not think it should influence your career choice 100%.  After reading the section on trends in the chapter, I realized how many different factors can really affect the labor force.  For example, the change in season increases the demand for certain goods and services.  Also the need for soldiers when a military threat arises can take many workers away from their current jobs.  It really is amazing how fast the job market can change due to the simplest detail such as someone retiring or getting fired.  Table 17.2’s estimated projections for the future were quite interesting to look at.  Most of the occupations that have increased projected openings are in the healthcare field, which is good for most of us I guess.  Others that involve technology are very limited, which makes sense because computers will most likely take over those jobs for us humans.

Our country’s national debt is “Likely to pass $15 trillion within the next few years” (Brown 2012).  That number is astronomical and completely ridiculous.  I feel like there is no way we should have ever gotten to this point as a nation.  In my opinion, I believe that technology is to blame for the majority of the debt and taxes we are faced paying.  I think it is a shame that children of illegal workers avoid postsecondary education to protect their parents’ status.  These illegal workers are usually employed at jobs that normal American citizens would never think twice about becoming employed at.  I think they deserve to be treated fairly, regardless of their lack of citizenship.

The impact that technology has on the job market is overwhelming to me.  I have always been a strong advocate against technology and how in my opinion, has destroyed the very nature of human behavior.  We as humans do not need to think anymore because a machine or computer is able to do it.  Technology seems to make people lazy because of the convenience and dependence upon certain devices.  I foresee many more jobs being taken away from people due to the rise in technological advances.  This is definitely a negative outcome in my mind because people that need these jobs to support a family are being overtaken by a robot.  Even computers can have flaws, because there is no emotion attached to a computer, as there is in a human being.  This can make a huge difference when it comes to certain decision-making tasks.
