Bloch’s article starts out with this, “The human experience
of work varies from joy to desperation, from the excitement of the new to the
boredom of “been there, done that” (2005, 194). I think everyone at some point
in their life has said this to themselves, and I know I have, before deciding
to go back to school for school counseling. Even those we would think would
love their jobs feel at times like they are “stuck”.
When I first started reading this article I was unclear about what exactly Bloch meant by her complexity, chaos and nonlinear theory. To be honest, I understood what the characteristics of the complex adaptive entities were, but unclear about how they would relate to careers. When she started to explain each one give examples of each characteristic and how it can be applied, I really began to make connections to the real world. The one I can relate to is an attractor that limits growth, specifically torus attractors. When I was working for a specific day care, I was unhappy where I was and thought that just switching day cares would renew my love for working in a day care setting. I switched and was happy for a while but the same problems arose and it seemed that I was just going
I feel as most of the articles we have read in the weeks before, lead off one another and build on each other, maybe it is just me. Spirituality is a common theme that I see talked about in the articles. It seems to me that many people believe that having spirituality allows and helps them to go farther in life and in their career. “More than three fourths of Americans feel the need to experience spiritual growth in their lives”, (Gallup and Jones, 2000, 201). Spirituality also meaning being connected or feeling connected. Bloch states that, “complex adaptive entities exist only as a part of nested inseparability or connectedness”, (2005, 201). You need to work through each of the adaptive entities in order become “unstuck”, and move forward with whatever career choice is in your future.
I really enjoyed reading this article by Bloch and I feel as though I could look back at my career choice and path from the point of high school up to now and apply the adaptive entities to my own life.
