There are many people in this world who have indecision with their career of choice.  Should I be doing this? Will this make me happy? These are some of the questions that lots of people ask themselves when they are indecisive about what they want to do.  I for one was one of those people.  I went into undergraduate work as a math major.  I picked the major solely based on that I was good at math, and my mother wanted me to have a major when I went into college.  Needless to say that I was indecisive when I went to college.  If I wasn’t indecisive, I could have save myself a lot of time.  Looking back to the first day of class when we looked at our career autobiography, it got me thinking that I was indecisive until I took certain classes that sparked my interest.  I think that a lot of people’s indecisiveness in the career field comes from inexperience of different things in life.  If people never get out there and experience different aspects of life, then how are they going to know if they like it?  I think people’s indecisiveness comes from not knowing.  In Mark Savickas’ (1995) article, he talks about how indecision is shown as a personality problem or defect.  I don’t think that at all.  I think that indecision is not a personality problem, it is a problem of not know what is out there in the world and how a particular person will react in certain situations.  I don’t think it is a defect because I think everyone at some point in their life has to face a decision that they are not sure what to make.  Whether it is choosing food, where to live, or even a career choice people are going to be indecisive.  It is not knowing or experiencing that makes people indecisive not that it is a personality problem.
Even though Savickas (1995) briefly talked about what indecision is, he gave a great analysis of figuring out how to correct it in a career choice setting.  His five steps of life theme were very promising.  He brings what they know about their life and what they identify with to narrating those beliefs back to the client and finding a theme within them.  The life theme helps them to find things about themselves that they would not normally find.  If would been nice to have someone do this counseling to me before college so that I could have chose the right career choice from the beginning.
